A range of scholarships are available for students planning to take undergraduate studies at Heriot-Watt University. Each of our Schools offers scholarships specifically for their own students and these are indicated by the School colours. (Refer to the navigation menu to see the colour for the School providing your choice of course). Each scholarship lists a summary of eligibility criteria, number of awards and a key contact if you would like additional information. In addition, the University offers a range of scholarships which are open to students attending any of our Schools and these are indicated by the corporate orange colour.

Access Bursaries

Availability: Undergraduates who are ordinarily resident in Scotland and eligible for SAAS funding.
Number of Awards: A minimum of 10 bursaries a year.

Students who are awarded an Access Bursary receive a total of £2,000. The student is paid £1,000 in their first year of study, (includes those entering directly to Years 2 or 3), and £1,000 in the final, Honours year. To be eligible to apply, applicants should be studying an HNC, HND, Access Programme or Highers at a Scottish College, be at School and in receipt the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), or have been in care within the UK.

British Chamber of Commerce in Germany Foundation Scholarship (German students)

The BCCG foundation is a charity registered in Germany and provides financial support and partial scholarships to British and German nationals for study or research in the Federal Republic of Germany or the UK respectively. German citizens may apply for awards for study or research in the UK. Successful candidates receive a one-off payment which is intended to provide supplementary financial support. This is subject to acceptance by the relevant institution and evidence that the course or research activity has commenced. Football Bursaries

In partnership with the Heart of Midlothian Football Academy, Heriot-Watt University offers football bursaries to players who wish to continue their development while studying for a degree classification. Whether you are working with a professional club or are aspiring to become a professional either during or post your time at the University, then our programme will be able to support your progress. You will be eligible to represent the University in the Scottish Universities League and the Semi-Professional East of Scotland League. Support includes twice weekly team sessions, twice weekly individual sessions, Sports Science and Medicine Support and finally access to our excellent football facilities which provide indoor, outdoor and grass surfaces. Any enquiries should be directed to Ross Campbell, our Sports Scholarship Coordinator.

Heriot-Watt University award many music scholarships each year supported by the Alumni Fund, in the form of free music tuition for talented singers and instrumentalists. In addition, the Archer Music Scholarships, in memory of the late John Archer, offer up to two scholarships each year for students taking part in residential courses, and one scholarship for a talented musician to receive free music tuition for the year.

The following criteria are taken into consideration:

  • musical ability and potential, proof of exam results and membership of orchestras or choirs;
  • a reference from your last vocal or instrumental teacher;
  • in the case of the Archer Music Scholarships, a personal statement is also required.

All music scholars are automatic members of the orchestra or choir, and will be expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts. If eligible, students may apply for an academic scholarship in addition to a music scholarship.

Royal Caledonian Schools Trust

Sports Bursaries

Sports Bursaries have been introduced to offer students the opportunity to represent Heriot-Watt at the top level, while continuing to train and develop as an elite athlete while studying at the University. Athletes are offered a comprehensive range of support packages to cover all aspects of training and competition whilst studying for a degree classification.

Sports Scholarships

The Centre for Sport and Exercise has been running its Sports Scholarship Programme for over 20 years. The programme offers support in the region of £2,000 to athletes considered to be of national standard in any of our 32 Sports Union sports. Always expanding, our programme now offers Sports Science and Sports Medicine support, academic flexibility, financial support for training and competition expenses, scholar clothing and access to the Centre for Sport and Exercise facilities. Chevron and Heriot-Watt University have a relationship stretching back over 30 years covering recruitment, research and knowledge transfer.

  • The Chevron Enhanced Level Scholarship is valued at up to £6,000.
  • Recipients of a scholarship will receive £1,000 in year 3, £2,000 in year 4 and £3,000 in year 5 on their chosen MEng degree programme with the funds being paid in two parts per academic year, e.g. in year 4, £1,000 at the start of Semester 1 and £1,000 at the start of Semester 2.
  • Award of the Scholarship in years 4 and 5 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and achievement of an average 60% mark in the previous year's modules.

Applicants must:

  • be UK or EU nationals; and
  • currently be a year 2 student in either Chemical or Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University; and
  • expect to progress onto an MEng degree programme in either Chemical or Mechanical Engineering; and
  • must not be in receipt of a scholarship from an organisation other than Chevron or Heriot-Watt University.
